Merina Thioune

Project
Merina Thioune Well
49 families
The project
In March 2026, official consultations began for the construction of a new well in the village of Merina Thioune. The project is made possible by the contribution of a private donor, Francesca Nocivelli, and is co-financed (85% by the donor and 15% by the Municipality of Merina Dakhar), with the aim of transforming the beneficiaries into active partners.
Following the initial technical inspection already carried out, the intervention will focus on the transformation of the existing infrastructure. A manual extraction well will be converted into an automated system powered by photovoltaics and equipped with a water tower. This technological innovation will overcome the limitations of manual extraction, ensuring constant water availability and adequate pressure for agricultural distribution.
The primary objective of the work is to support local food production. Thanks to the new water capacity, it will be possible to irrigate and manage a one-hectare community garden. This space will be dedicated to agricultural cultivation, providing the community of Merina Thioune with a concrete tool to improve food access and promote the village’s economic development through agriculture.

Tabby Well

The project
In 2025, an old manual well, built in the 1990s, was converted into an automated system with a water tower, making it suitable for agricultural irrigation. The project was 85% funded by Energia Per lo Sviluppo and 15% by the local population.
This is our first co-financing project, a strategy widely used in international cooperation to transform beneficiaries into active partners. By investing their own resources, the community is more motivated to ensure the long-term maintenance and management of the asset, reducing dependence on external aid. The community decided to dedicate the well to the memory of Marcello Chelli.
- Thanks to this well, a one-hectare community garden has been established, providing a vital resource for local food security.
- The management and sustainability of the garden are guaranteed by the support of the Center for Territorial Development Promotion (a Senegalese entity), which ensures technical organization and daily monitoring of agricultural activities.
- The women of the community were trained in farming activities.
