The project

In 2013, an old manual well built in the 1990s was transformed into an automated system powered by solar energy, making it suitable for agricultural irrigation. The well is part of the MorModou project, created in memory of Samb Modou and Diop Mor, two young Senegalese men killed in Florence on December 13, 2011. In addition to this intervention, the project also involved the installation of 11 photovoltaic systems in other villages of the region, with the goal of promoting sustainable access to energy and water in rural areas. In 2018, the system was converted into a château d’eau, a more efficient structure for water distribution. The well is used by the inhabitants of the villages of Dalakh 1, Dalakh 2 and Thiéppe.

  • Thanks to this well, a one-hectare community garden has been established, providing a vital resource for local food security.
  • The management and sustainability of the garden are guaranteed by the support of the Center for Territorial Development Promotion (a Senegalese entity), which ensures technical organization and daily monitoring of agricultural activities.
  • The project has been certified for carbon credit generation by eliminating the need to boil water for purification, replacing the use of wood and fossil fuels with solar-powered safe water systems.
  • Women of the community were trained in farming activities.
