In 2013, an old manual well built in the 1990s was transformed into an automated system powered by solar energy, making it suitable for agricultural irrigation. The well is part of the MorModou project, created in memory of Samb Modou and Diop Mor, two young Senegalese men killed in Florence on December 13, 2011. In addition to this intervention, the project also included the construction of 11 photovoltaic systems in other villages in the region, with the aim of promoting sustainable access to energy and water in rural areas.
The construcion of the well involved: the installation of a solar-powered pump; four 250 Wp photovoltaic panels; two elevated water tanks of 5,000 liters each, for a total of 10,000 liters.
-
In 2018, the system was converted into a château d’eau, a more efficient structure for water distribution.
-
The project was certified for carbon credit generation, thanks to the replacement of fossil fuels with solar energy.
-
Women in the community were trained to carry out agricultural activities.
